In 1984, Thomas Meyer founded Desigual in El Raval, a neighbourhood in Barcelona, with the creation of a jacket that is now recognized as one of the first upcycled products in the fashion industry. The word "Desigual" was suggested by filmmaker Isabel Coixet, along with the motto "no es lo mismo" ("it's not the same"). The first Desigual logo, the Humans, which features a naked man and woman holding hands, was designed by Spanish graphic designer, illustrator, and sculptor, Peret. The first Desigual store was designed by architect Tonet Sunyer and opened in Ibiza's port in 1986. The early years of Desigual were a gathering point for people who were drawn to the brand's free, authentic, optimistic, unapologetic, and Mediterranean spirit, which continues to inspire the world from Barcelona more than three decades later.
