Bruno Magli, along with his siblings Marino and Maria, started making women's shoes in a small basement in Bologna, Italy in 1936. As their business grew, they opened their first factory in 1948. They were pioneers in Italy's footwear industry, recognizing the demand for Italian-made shoes as a symbol of good taste and financial status. In fact, they were the first in Italy to focus on exporting their products.

Over time, Bruno Magli's offerings grew to encompass not only women's shoes but also men's and women's accessories and leather clothing.
