With the warmer weather fast approaching, Wedding Season is well and truly on its way! I’m sure by now, your fridge is full of wedding invitations for Spring Summer, so let’s talk about those dress codes and black tie in particular. Black tie weddings are my absolute favourite because not only am I a big believer in respecting dress codes for special events but also because I love dressing up! Every wedding is special, but I can’t help but feel the excitement rising when I receive an invitation to a black tie wedding. It calls for glamour, elegance and a something a little extra special. So what will you be wearing to your next black tie wedding?
When it comes to a black tie wedding, take inspiration from the likes of Big and Carrie’s almost wedding from the Sex and the City movie where Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha donned exquisite gowns to accompany Carrie down the isle (well almost). Now if you’re a bridesmaid like the girls from the SATC movie, there may be significantly less freedom in choosing what you want to wear, but guests typically can let their style shine so this is your time!

Flawless Black Tie Wedding Style
For a black tie wedding, style is all about elegance and glamour. For this special occasion, think luxurious fabrics and embellishments such as lace, satin, silk and tulle. With the style you are choosing, it’s important to first consider your personality, personal style and body shape. You’ll want a style that highlights your figure and personality. Whether you’re shy or outgoing, you’ll want your dress to compliment your personality so you feel comfortable and confident.
Colour
Colour for a black tie wedding is something you can have lots of fun with. Whether it’s cobalt blue like Miranda or vibrant red like Samantha at the Sex and the City wedding (not to mention an endless amount of other colours) this is your time to have a little fun. For a regal look, work with jewel tones like emerald, sapphire, amethyst, ruby red like the Elle Zeitoune Lori Gown and turquoise. These shades are vibrant and are sure to make a beautiful statement. If colour isn’t for you though, black is always a winner and it is flattering on any figure – work with a gorgeous texture like lace or sequins to take the style to the next level!

Silhouette
Black tie weddings call for glamorous style and choosing the right silhouette is key in nailing that look. For that ultra glamazon look, opt for a mermaid or fitted look to enhance your curves and shape. A fitted style like the Grace and Hart Frilling Around Gown in a block colour will keep your look stunning yet simplistic. While your dress on a coat hanger may look minimalistic as it’s a block colour and figure hugging, it will be sure to turn heads when it is hugging your curves with every step! For the women who are looking for something a little less fitted, an A-line style or ball gown is perfect for you. With a fitted bodice, a cinched waist and a flowing skirt, this silhouette like the Elle Zeitoune Gwyneth Gown is always a gorgeous choice.
What Not To Wear
For a black tie wedding, elegance, formality and something extra special is key. This does leave you with quite a bit of creative freedom, however there are design styles that should be avoided. White for one is something you should never wear to a wedding. No ifs or buts, leave the white dresses for another occasion or for your special day, not for someone else’s wedding. Even black and white stripes or prints with lots of white need to be considered carefully as too much white should be left at home.
Other design elements that should be avoided are excessive cut outs and naked dresses. While Beyonce may be slaying it on the red carpet in the latest trend of ‘naked dresses,’ this is one red carpet look that does not translate to wedding attire. While you of course want to look fabulous, the bride and groom should always be the standout, so keep your look elegant and even on the modest side.
Aside from those few pointers on what not to wear, a black tie wedding gives you the opportunity to dress to the nines and show off your most glamorous side! Don’t let this chance pass you by, go all out with a fabulous look for a fantastic event.
